The Hippie Moose

Simple, Spiritual, and Sustainable Living.

I love this time of year when everything is growing, blooming, and so alive!

My lavender is doing really well this year.  Last year, not so much.  I tried wintering it in containers but the roots froze and that was the end of that.  Soooo, last year we planted lavender in the ground where it wintered just fine!

The rest of the garden is coming along nicely...

It's fry bread season again and after this past weekend I'm might be in need of an intervention.  The problem stems from my complex network of people who will inform me of frybread being made, and also deliver to me wherever I am.  One such "dealer" being my own husband.  I believe they call this ENABLING.  If you have never had Fry Bread... just say no.  It just takes one.

Don't know what Fry Bread is?  Wikipedia can help you:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frybread

Don't know what Fry Bread looks like? I can help you...

It's exactly like it sounds... deep fried bread.
It's also the base for the famous Indian Taco.  (My husbands personal favorite)  Seen here:

Don't know where to get one?  Well, this is what you do.  You search Pow Wow Trail.  Find one in your area.  Go.
If you are having trouble thinking because the images above are SO distracting then click this link and pick your country: Pow Wow Trail CANADA and USA

I can't make it any easier for you people. But please, practice responsible Fry Breading.

A few Guidelines I think you might need:

1. Know when to say when.  You still have to fit your butt back in your car to get home.
2. Cutting in line will get you killed.
3. If a lady named Theresa (a.k.a. Black Eyed T) is taking your order you can actually order a lip gloss and nail polish at the same time.  Kill two birds with one stone.

Happy Pow Wowing!!

For February we peeled ourselves a Pomelo. It's alot like a grapefruit ~ but on steroids!  Mine was a yellow colour but I have seen pictures of green ones as well.  They have a thick skin but it's pretty easy to peel and eat!

I watched this youtube video to see how to peel it:

More info on this unusual fruit:

I REALLY liked it!  Husband liked it but found it really acidic, that being said he ate alot of it.  I would buy them again IF they were on sale.  They are pretty pricey.  I got mine for $2.50.  Grapefruits are more reasonable fiscally speaking!

Overall ~ worth a try!

When I saw this on Pinterest I really didn't think it would work.  How can something be so simple, and SO exciting.  I love popcorn.  Love It.  I tried this with 1/4 cup of popcorn & 2 minutes in a lunch size paper bag. Presto, pop-o!!  I'm not sure how much money this could save in microwave popcorn but I'm guessing I might be able to afford some new moccasins a lot sooner than anticipated!

Ok, I didn't go wild and crazy for my first month of this new food journey.  I'm dragging my family along for the ride and figured it was best to throw them in the shallow end rather than the deep one!  We started with a young coconut.  No, I've never had one before. I have tons of experience with the hard shredded variety, with the store bought milk, even cracking open a hard brown coconut.  This was something entirely different.

First I had to figure out how to get into it.  Thank you youtube!

http://youtu.be/QPvhxeg_PUA  this video was helpful!

Then I had to decide what to DO with it.  We all tasted the flesh raw on it's own to get an idea of the flavor.  Then I blended the flesh, the water and some bananas and frozen strawberries to make the best smoothie I have ever tasted!

A few crappy pictures (my bad):

Overall I would say everyone needs to try this at least once!
