Simple, Spiritual, and Sustainable Living.

Happy Anniversary to me, Happy Anniversary to me, happy anniversary... you get the idea.

The dreads are another year old.

Still loving them.  (And the dude beside them!)

For everyday I use tea tree oil shampoo OR my new exciting Cedar Shampoo by Spirit Earth Holistics.  It smells AMAZING.

I still use the same concoction to deep clean them:

Fill a sink or container with:

1/2 cup baking soda
8 drop tea tree oil*
2 tbsp. lemon juice
2 tbsp. sea salt.
Fill with really hot water... as hot as you can handle.
Soak for 10 min.
Leave  for another 30 min wrapped in a towel.
Rinse.

* If you are not a fan of tea tree oil sub in something you love the smell of!

Recently I wore my hair in a ponytail for work.  BAD idea. By around 1pm I had a HUGE headache and I realized my hair is WAY too heavy for this hairstyle now. Apparently 20 lbs of hair pulling at your temples causes undue stress.  Who knew.

I started looking for some new ideas on how to tame the dreads.  I even started a Pinterest Board to compile my ideas: http://pinterest.com/thehippiemoose/dreadlock-ideas/

I found this tutorial at Knotty Boy (I LOVE their dread conditioner by-the-way, especially the Purple Haze (lavender scented).
http://www.knottyboy.com/learn/tutorials/knotted-up-do-style-tutorial/

I actually managed to do this in under 2 min. sitting at the computer reading the instructions.

I got bored again, this is not news to most people.
It's not even close to being done but at least the big artwork is fnished on both sides.

In honour of my Dreadlock Anniversary last week I took a look at the blogs I read that just happen to be written by fellow dready's.  They are some pretty amazing people!  SO....a shout out to all my fellow dready momma's in blogland.    Amazing women like Sara at Walk Slowly, Live Wildly.  The Organic Sister Tara and her new wandering tales...  the amazing pictures at Boho Photography.

I was in the middle of painting my bike so unfortunately I'm sporting my favorite painting shirt.

I'm pretty thrilled that my dreads are starting to grow.  They spent the first year locking up and getting shorter (ggrrrr).

Question asked most often..... how do I clean them.  I'm glad you asked!

Fill a sink or container with:

1/2 cup baking soda
8 drop tea tree oil*
2 tbsp. lemon juice
2 tbsp. sea salt.
Fill with really hot water... as hot as you can handle.
Soak for 10 min.
Leave  for another 30 min wrapped in a towel.

Well, I have had some requests for pictures of my new dreads. Here they are at three weeks....

Dave did them for me, it took about 6 hours to do. We did it over two evenings (I looked pretty stupid for one day) and we used wax. One note if you plan to do this method, you can get a jar of wax at the beauty supply stores for about $4, you will pay about $14 at the head shops that sell it. Choose wisely.

I took this picture myself with a mirror because Dave is at the homestead and I am in Kingston, so it kinda sucks but I'm sure you can deal with it. The top dreads are tied in a knot and the bottom ones are just loose. I love them but they are a bit itchy at times, and you have to cover your pillow so you don't get wax all over it. Liz from the House Famous gave me a great tip this morning, she said if I sprayed them with water/tea tree oil solution it will ease the itchies...I plan on trying that one out promptly. Otherwise, I'm pretty thrilled, and I'm thinking Dave might have a new career! Move over ZOHAN! (I will pay for that crack but ooohhhh it was worth it!!)
Some might be asking ...Why? Well, dreads don't need to be conditioned (they actually scream in terror at the idea) and I can use biodegradable soap to wash them that can then go into our grey water supply to water our very large garden. ALSO they are very easy, no messing with your hair, just wash, dry, repeat. Maybe throw on a scarf. Once they are locked up you don't much have to think about your hair again. I'm liking that. It's this or shave myself bald. And if you've met my father you know why I didn't opt for that one.
