The Hippie Moose

Simple, Spiritual, and Sustainable Living.

We have finally relocated, phew, done.  Now I have to admit there are a few boxes kicking around still, and my office looks a bit like a tornado, but things are shaping up nicely.
We moved on November 1st, and I can almost see our old place from my kitchen window now that the trees have no leaves, so we didn't move far!!

We got in just in time because November and December here have seen a lot of this....

Luckily we just installed one of these....
(The woodstove, not the dog)

The cat has found a new favorite spot among my collection of coffee pots.

This is what the front yard looked like on Thursday morning...

This is what I looked like by Thursday at noon...

Sometimes life is hard to understand.  But I'm really happy I managed to get so much unpacking done before this happened!
Enjoy yourselves... but watch that ice!

I just walked into my sons room.
I turned.
I walked out.
Who instructed these two in the use of explosives?
When did it go off?
Why didn't I hear anything?

I could freak out.
I'm not going to.
I'm just going to give them both big hugs,
Assure them that my love is not based on performance,
And tell them they have 24 hours.
I will be outside reading if you need me.

In honour of my 100th post I thought I would ramble about my weekend.  My husband has been away for three days and it rained for two of them. Nice. In case he doesn't believe me I took a few pictures....

I learned that I seem to get WAY more done when he's gone than when he's here.  Odd.  I had a few unfinished projects I decided to tackle in his absence.  The first was a chair that I bought at a junk shop (for lack of a better term) at least 10 years ago... OK 15 but who's counting.  I was inspired to do this by Brenda.  I read THIS blog posting the day Dave left and was completely in awe of her ability.
I learned that I can break my own rules...I have  a rule against painting wood.  So I stained it with blue milk paint.  You can still see the grain and details through it... but it's blue.  I consider this a fair compromise.  I learned that boys are a great help sanding.  Staining.. not so much.  Going with the grain seems completely and genetically beyond them. I blame my husbands DNA for this.
I also learned that even though they are boys the have very decided opinions on fabric so a 5 min. trip to the fabric store turned into 35.  The stripes were the compromise between the vision of three different personalities.  I also learned that stapling fabric with a electric staple/brad gun is pretty scary stuff with an 7 and 8 year old "helping" you.

I learned that tea tastes better in my new mug.  No.. it's not all in my head.  It really does.
I learned that once I start to paint it's REALLY hard to stop.

I learned that when trying to fix your plastic dog head with expanding foam because your adorable sons smashed his nose in...... less is more.  There's a reason they call it expanding.

Finally, I learned that I really miss my man when he's gone.

BEFORE

AFTER

Well we have owned our 76 acres for one year now! The time has just flown by which is suprising considering how time seemed to just creep while we were searching for property. We have made lots of changes like adding a garden, a teepee, a treehouse, built a mud room, a fire pit, installed a wood stove and painted. Here are a few before and after pics of the main room... it's amazing what a little colour will do!

Breath in, breath out. aahhhhh. I feel like I just haven't had time to breath lately with all the activity. I'm sure it's because I homeschool that I'm not used to the rushing around and flurry of activity that seems to be the summer of 2009.

To recap.... Dave and I went to see Xavior Rudd in July when he was playing in Toronto. I highly recommend him if you have never heard his music. Not only is he an AMAZING musician but heavily into land rights for aboriginal people groups. His main focus is the Aborigines of Australia (his homeland) but he is sympathetic to the First Peoples of all lands.

This video is one of my favorite songs:

MOTHER by Xavier Rudd

A few weeks ago we adopted a 2 year old Golden Retriever named Ginger. In my head I was thinking... "cool! we get to skip that puppy stage!" stupid me. Just a note, Golden Retrievers NEVER leave the puppy stage.... they just get bigger. We LOVE her and have gotten used to the flurry of fur. Our two older dogs are both 11 and pretty much sleep most of the time so having her around has been a bit of a culture shock for all of us.

Last week was our annual camping trip to Bon Echo. Sadly we were missing the Williams Family as they traipse across Australia instead. It was a great week, but a little chilly at times. GREAT for sleeping however. We had an amazing storm on one day that lasted a few hours and lightning took a tree down on another campsite. We have been doing this camping trip since before Dakota was born and we all talked about how much easier it is now to let our kids loose on the beach without worrying about them eating sand, having to change diapers, crawling through who-knows-what, crying in the middle of the night and having to make a bottle by flashlight, fitting all the assorted baby things into your car that once seemed roomy and now looks like an Austin Mini, and just generally loosing your mind.

The Art Truck is a work in progress and since my last posting about adding the cap I have done a bunch of detail work:

And today taught Soap Making at a camp called MAKE run by Rustle Church in downtown Kingston. It was a true breath of fresh air to my summer. The kids were AMAZING, we had a ton of fun, and everyone was pleased with their projects. Success.

Well, we are pleased to announce that we are the proud parents of a beautiful 2 year old girl! This is our first girl and I am very excited to add some estrogen to this family... I've been feeling pretty outnumbered!

Her name is Ginger.

Yesterday I painted a sign for our business. On Saturday there is a grand opening at the market where we are selling this summer and it was suggested by the other vendors that a sign is always a good idea.

OK, so after painting the sign I set it up on the lawn to dry. When I came back this is what I saw.....

It might be just me but I laughed till I cried! And yes I stole the idea from Peanuts.

We had a great time at Skeleton Park Music Festival yesterday. The rain was a downer but I'm shocked at the number of people who showed up anyway! Kingstonians are NOT afraid of water. It might interest you to know that the park where this great event is held is not only a beautiful park, but it is also listed on Canada's Top 5 Haunted Places.

I was using a borrowed camera so the shots of the festival are NOT that good, but it will give you a feel for the amazing vibe of the event in general! Including the kids parade which is always my favorite part, aside from the music of course. The pics are in a slideshow at the VERY bottom of this page.

On a side note I broke one of my cardinal rules of festival attendance. I bought something. Now this might seem odd to you but when you sell at markets and festivals EVERY weekend, buying stuff can severely cut into your profits. However, the booth beside mine featured hand spun and dyed wool. WHO can resist that?!?! I have taken a picture to show you, so you might understand why I have broken my own rule.

The wool is available through etsy by going
here! Mine is called "Jeremiah".

Well we are back in Kingston for a few days. We came back for Track & Field for the boys but it was postponed because of the blockade in Tyendinaga... so we will be back again next week for track. I will be bringing down rasperries when I come on Monday so stay tuned.

The boys are really enjoying the use of city luxeries...

if only he would learn to DO the laundry.

We also took advantage of our time in the city for Dakota to get a haircut. He had opted to grow out his mohawk this year but we are pleased he has gone back to it... we really missed it.

We had a great time doing the market in Bancroft and met some really nice people. We are looking forward to July and August when the tourist season really starts and things get busy.

Everything about that day seemed brighter, sweeter, and more alive. It was a day the Hippie Moose will never forget. It was a day of change.

Frustrated with the daily grind he chose to seek unconventional wisdom, his search led him to a mysterious mountain. After having survived three near fatal philosophical experiences on the way, he felt quite inspired to reach its summit. On this summit he discovered a long haired,s semi-neurotic Guru Moose wearing love beads, bare feet and displaying an obvious passion for herbal remedies (the legal kind of course).

Startling the Guru during his morning yoga session - his "salutaion to the sun" didn't end wll - the Hippie Moose cautiously approached and waited for an opportunity to speak. "Not groovy man", whimpered Guru Moose as he switched to Mountain pose.

Slowly opening his eyes the Guru Moose asked, "What do you seek?"

"I am on a journey to find authentic love, peace, and life purpose.... I feel like a hippie-crit", sobbed the Hippie Moose.

Clearing his voice the Guru Moose said:

"Listen carefully and learn from an ancient Ojibway Proverb: When the last tree is cut, the last river is poisoned, and the last field is destroyed... ONLY then will they realize their money doesn't create shelter, supply water, or grow food."

......from this journey emerged The Hippie Moose revolution.

What is The Hippie Moose revolution? It is creativly empowering people to live simple, spiritual, and highly sustainable lives - by re-introducing the earth into everyday living.

Well, I have had some requests for pictures of my new dreads. Here they are at three weeks....

Dave did them for me, it took about 6 hours to do. We did it over two evenings (I looked pretty stupid for one day) and we used wax. One note if you plan to do this method, you can get a jar of wax at the beauty supply stores for about $4, you will pay about $14 at the head shops that sell it. Choose wisely.

I took this picture myself with a mirror because Dave is at the homestead and I am in Kingston, so it kinda sucks but I'm sure you can deal with it. The top dreads are tied in a knot and the bottom ones are just loose. I love them but they are a bit itchy at times, and you have to cover your pillow so you don't get wax all over it. Liz from the House Famous gave me a great tip this morning, she said if I sprayed them with water/tea tree oil solution it will ease the itchies...I plan on trying that one out promptly. Otherwise, I'm pretty thrilled, and I'm thinking Dave might have a new career! Move over ZOHAN! (I will pay for that crack but ooohhhh it was worth it!!)
Some might be asking ...Why? Well, dreads don't need to be conditioned (they actually scream in terror at the idea) and I can use biodegradable soap to wash them that can then go into our grey water supply to water our very large garden. ALSO they are very easy, no messing with your hair, just wash, dry, repeat. Maybe throw on a scarf. Once they are locked up you don't much have to think about your hair again. I'm liking that. It's this or shave myself bald. And if you've met my father you know why I didn't opt for that one.
