Simple, Spiritual, and Sustainable Living.

My friend Allie requested an easy hat pattern to knit. This used to be my favorite pattern but I must admit I started to crochet last year and haven't looked back.

**Update I used a size 8 knitting needle for these hats!

Cast on 84 Stitches.

Knit the first row.

Purl the second row.

Continue alternating rows until it measures approx 8 inches when laid flat.

End with a purl row.

Knit 5 stitches, then knit the next two together. Repeat across the whole row. (knit 5, knit 2 together.)

You should end up with 72 stitches on your needle.

Purl the next row.

Knit 4 stitches, then knit two stitches together. Repeat across the whole row. (knit 4, knit 2 together.)

You should have 60 stitches on your needle.

Purl the next row.

Knit 3 stitches, then knit two stitches together. Repeat across the whole row. (knit 3, knit 2 together.)

Purl the next row.

Knit 2 stitches, then knit two stitches together. Repeat across the whole row. (knit 2, knit 2 together.)

You should have 36 stitches on your needles.

Purl the next row.

Knit 1 stitch, then knit two stitches together. Repeat across the whole row.

You should have 24 stitches on your needle.

Purl the next row.

Knit two stitches together across the whole row. (you should end up with 12 stitches.)

Cut off the yarn to there is a 1 meter long tail! (or about a yard for American readers)

Thread it onto a yarn needle. Thread needle through each stitch as you take it off your knitting needles.

Pull the yarn through the stitches leaving a little loop where you started. Thread the needle through the loop to form a circle and pull it tight. This is the crown of your hat.

With right sides together use the yarn already on your sewing needle to stitch up the side seam.

Stop about an inch from the bottom.

Turn the hat right side out and sew the last inch with wrong sides together. When the hat rolls, this seam will disappear.

Tie off and weave in your ends.
*** If you want to make a smaller hat reduce the number of stitches you cast on by increments of 7.
If you want to branch out into something more exciting.... check out the free hat patterns HERE... some of them are really funky!

Well, not one to miss out on any kind of fun I had to make my own applesauce labels too. I made a few different versions but this is one I found free online and had a few different types to choose from... check it out HERE! They have one for Canning, Treats, Crafts, Homebrew, and Wine!

The kids and I went apple picking. We made apple sauce last year and when we found a few jars in the winter time it was like finding a lost treasure. We decided we better make more! We scanned their artwork and helped them make up their own labels. They are pretty excited about giving away some of their own applesauce.

p.s. I have to agree with Tammy, there is nothing like that popping sound as your jars cool!

On Tuesday I had to go to the dump. I did not come away empty handed. Some poor soul actually got rid of this....

I know.... I couldn't believe it either. His nose was almost severed and something bit a chunk out of his ear but otherwise, nothing a little love can't fix. In case you haven't recognized him... his name is Nipper and he is the RCA dog. After giving him a bath, which included vinegar and sandpaper here is Nipper after his big makeover....

You should note that this thing is taller than my real dogs and made all three of them growl the first time they saw him. SO... the next time you go to the dump keep your eyes open... you just might go home with a new member of the family!

Life up north seems SOOO quiet now that the Youth Builder team has left. We had this very cool group up to our property to talk about Simple Living & Sustainability. Dave also took them to Tyendinaga to speak with some Elders about First Nations land rights, justice, and culture. We had an AMAZING time with them. Dave fixed up two traditional native structures for them to sleep in and to their credit they used them. The group of guys actually slept in the teepee every night! Tom & Gillian lead the group last summer and this year.... and we can't wait until next year to do it again!

Most of the tarps used were free from the local lumber yards, we love a good deal!

OK, so you're asking yourself "What craziness is this now?" Well. We are headed back up north and up to this point the kids have blankets covering the windows in their room. Tacky but functional. We have some guests coming and I thought "hey, maybe we should spiff up the joint!". Problem. Don't have the money for drapes BUT I do have a box full of thrift store jeans. BINGO!

For the big panels I cut the inside leg seam all the way up one leg and down the other. Then I stitched the two legs together to make one long panel. For smaller panels I cut down the hip seams and the inside leg seams and made smaller panels. This honestly took me about an hour to do enough for 3 windows. To hang them just shove a dowel through the belt loops. Some tips... Skinny jeans are not a wise investment... not enough material. Go for the biggest sizes they have. (I paid about $2 per pair of jeans and I used 6 pairs for the three windows) Beware jeans that narrow at the ankle, you get nice wide panels at the top and they narrow at the bottom. Boot let or wide leg jeans work wonders. I added some patched here and there but you could add anything, go crazy.

Breath in, breath out. aahhhhh. I feel like I just haven't had time to breath lately with all the activity. I'm sure it's because I homeschool that I'm not used to the rushing around and flurry of activity that seems to be the summer of 2009.

To recap.... Dave and I went to see Xavior Rudd in July when he was playing in Toronto. I highly recommend him if you have never heard his music. Not only is he an AMAZING musician but heavily into land rights for aboriginal people groups. His main focus is the Aborigines of Australia (his homeland) but he is sympathetic to the First Peoples of all lands.

This video is one of my favorite songs:

A few weeks ago we adopted a 2 year old Golden Retriever named Ginger. In my head I was thinking... "cool! we get to skip that puppy stage!" stupid me. Just a note, Golden Retrievers NEVER leave the puppy stage.... they just get bigger. We LOVE her and have gotten used to the flurry of fur. Our two older dogs are both 11 and pretty much sleep most of the time so having her around has been a bit of a culture shock for all of us.

Last week was our annual camping trip to Bon Echo. Sadly we were missing the Williams Family as they traipse across Australia instead. It was a great week, but a little chilly at times. GREAT for sleeping however. We had an amazing storm on one day that lasted a few hours and lightning took a tree down on another campsite. We have been doing this camping trip since before Dakota was born and we all talked about how much easier it is now to let our kids loose on the beach without worrying about them eating sand, having to change diapers, crawling through who-knows-what, crying in the middle of the night and having to make a bottle by flashlight, fitting all the assorted baby things into your car that once seemed roomy and now looks like an Austin Mini, and just generally loosing your mind.

The Art Truck is a work in progress and since my last posting about adding the cap I have done a bunch of detail work:

And today taught Soap Making at a camp called MAKE run by Rustle Church in downtown Kingston. It was a true breath of fresh air to my summer. The kids were AMAZING, we had a ton of fun, and everyone was pleased with their projects. Success.

Well, we are pleased to announce that we are the proud parents of a beautiful 2 year old girl! This is our first girl and I am very excited to add some estrogen to this family... I've been feeling pretty outnumbered!

Her name is Ginger.
