The Hippie Moose

Simple, Spiritual, and Sustainable Living.

OK, so you're asking yourself "What craziness is this now?" Well. We are headed back up north and up to this point the kids have blankets covering the windows in their room. Tacky but functional. We have some guests coming and I thought "hey, maybe we should spiff up the joint!". Problem. Don't have the money for drapes BUT I do have a box full of thrift store jeans. BINGO!

For the big panels I cut the inside leg seam all the way up one leg and down the other. Then I stitched the two legs together to make one long panel. For smaller panels I cut down the hip seams and the inside leg seams and made smaller panels. This honestly took me about an hour to do enough for 3 windows. To hang them just shove a dowel through the belt loops. Some tips... Skinny jeans are not a wise investment... not enough material. Go for the biggest sizes they have. (I paid about $2 per pair of jeans and I used 6 pairs for the three windows) Beware jeans that narrow at the ankle, you get nice wide panels at the top and they narrow at the bottom. Boot let or wide leg jeans work wonders. I added some patched here and there but you could add anything, go crazy.

So the truck is packed and we are going to the beach when I discover......

Breath in, breath out. aahhhhh. I feel like I just haven't had time to breath lately with all the activity. I'm sure it's because I homeschool that I'm not used to the rushing around and flurry of activity that seems to be the summer of 2009.

To recap.... Dave and I went to see Xavior Rudd in July when he was playing in Toronto. I highly recommend him if you have never heard his music. Not only is he an AMAZING musician but heavily into land rights for aboriginal people groups. His main focus is the Aborigines of Australia (his homeland) but he is sympathetic to the First Peoples of all lands.

This video is one of my favorite songs:

MOTHER by Xavier Rudd

A few weeks ago we adopted a 2 year old Golden Retriever named Ginger. In my head I was thinking... "cool! we get to skip that puppy stage!" stupid me. Just a note, Golden Retrievers NEVER leave the puppy stage.... they just get bigger. We LOVE her and have gotten used to the flurry of fur. Our two older dogs are both 11 and pretty much sleep most of the time so having her around has been a bit of a culture shock for all of us.

Last week was our annual camping trip to Bon Echo. Sadly we were missing the Williams Family as they traipse across Australia instead. It was a great week, but a little chilly at times. GREAT for sleeping however. We had an amazing storm on one day that lasted a few hours and lightning took a tree down on another campsite. We have been doing this camping trip since before Dakota was born and we all talked about how much easier it is now to let our kids loose on the beach without worrying about them eating sand, having to change diapers, crawling through who-knows-what, crying in the middle of the night and having to make a bottle by flashlight, fitting all the assorted baby things into your car that once seemed roomy and now looks like an Austin Mini, and just generally loosing your mind.

The Art Truck is a work in progress and since my last posting about adding the cap I have done a bunch of detail work:

And today taught Soap Making at a camp called MAKE run by Rustle Church in downtown Kingston. It was a true breath of fresh air to my summer. The kids were AMAZING, we had a ton of fun, and everyone was pleased with their projects. Success.

Well, we are pleased to announce that we are the proud parents of a beautiful 2 year old girl! This is our first girl and I am very excited to add some estrogen to this family... I've been feeling pretty outnumbered!

Her name is Ginger.

2009 is over half way complete. Scary. I'm usually not one for making New Years Resolutions simply due to my poor track record in the past. This year I made one I have never made before and this morning I realized I'm still on track to complete it. Shocking.

What was this miraculous resolution that is actually attainable?

I decided to read a book a month. Simple.

So far this is what I have read this year:

*January: The Shack (Young)

*February: Irresistible Revolution (Claiborne)

*March: The Book of Negros (Hill)

*April: The Alchemist (Coelho)

*May: The Book of Negros(Hill) - no this isn't a typo... I just HAD to read it again.

*June: So you don't want to go to Church anymore? (Jacobsen/Coleman)

July: Three Cups of Tea (Mortenson)

I have a stack of books to pick from for the rest of the year but if you have a suggestion for an amazing book you've read please post it... I'm open for suggestions! I have put an asterisk beside the books I own so if you would like to borrow one... just give me a shout, I would recommend all of them.

(If you live outside of Canada the book by Lawrence Hill was released as "Someone knows my name" instead of "The Book of Negros".)

I'm new to Kijiji but this past week the family and I drove down to Port Hope to pick up a cap for our truck. It's silver and from a much older model ford so it doesn't fit perfectly, but it fits! And lets face it, we saved around $1900 from buying one new.

It just goes to show... one man's junk is another girls treasure!

When we got it home and I took a good look at it I was pretty bummed because it REALLY detracted from the paint job. We then proceeded to get rain, so I couldn't do a thing about it.

FINALLY on Thursday I got enough sunlight without rain in the forcast to get a base coat on it. Here are a few pictures just in case you didn't think you would recognize it when I drive past you on a busy street. It's not even close to being done, but as I type it's raining outside. Again.
SO, the next time you wan't something, check out the used sites around and save a perfectly good piece of whatever from a landfill!

Well, something just broke and it made me sad. Really my only recourse is to pitch it. This is why Dave and I are slowly converting everything to metal, wood, stone, fabric, any natural material.

There is an AMAZING free video on the topic of STUFF that I think EVERYONE should watch... so here it is, please take a minute to check it out, just click the picture below:

Yesterday I painted a sign for our business. On Saturday there is a grand opening at the market where we are selling this summer and it was suggested by the other vendors that a sign is always a good idea.

OK, so after painting the sign I set it up on the lawn to dry. When I came back this is what I saw.....

It might be just me but I laughed till I cried! And yes I stole the idea from Peanuts.

Well this is officially the fastest I have finished a project... probably because I really wanted to wear it!! Of course it is a million degrees outside and I could barely stand it for the time it took to take the pictures... but here is the finished product. If you are wondering what on earth I'm talking about check out my last post to put it all in context. The hat took me about 2 hours to do, mostly because I didn't have a pattern and I had to rip it back to fix the shape a few times.
